6 Things to Know Before Paying Cruise Gratuities

Original illustration of a calculator, receipt and coins beside a window overlooking a cruise ship

Budget cruise gratuities in three parts: the daily amount for each eligible guest, service charges on purchases, and any extra tips you choose to give. Prepaying the daily amount settles that part of the budget; it does not automatically settle the other two. For example, two adults in a Carnival standard stateroom on a seven-night sailing would budget $238 in daily gratuities, before purchase-based charges or extra tips.

Policy check: October 24, 2026. This guide compares published US-dollar policies for travelers booking through US-facing cruise-line sites. Your booking market, fare inclusions, cabin category and sailing terms can change the result. Confirm the amount in your reservation before paying.

1. Multiply the daily rate by guests and nights

Daily gratuities are quoted per person, not per cabin. These are the published rates checked for this update, before any included or prepaid benefit:

Cruise lineDaily amount per eligible guestScope to check
Carnival$17 standard stateroom; $19 suiteIts guidance applies from age 2
Royal Caribbean$18.50 other stateroom categories; $21 suiteConfirm how your exact cabin category is classified
Norwegian$20 Club Balcony Suite and below; $25 Suites and The HavenBookings made on or after January 1, 2023; guests age 3 and older

Sources: Carnival’s gratuity guidance, Royal Caribbean’s gratuity policy, and Norwegian’s cruise-preparation FAQ. This is a three-line comparison, not a rate list for every cruise brand. Norwegian also flags an additional prepaid-service-charge tax for Hawaii; the examples below exclude that tax and other itinerary-specific adjustments.

Use this planning formula:

Daily rate × guests subject to that rate × charged nights = daily-gratuity budget

For a seven-night trip, the arithmetic is:

Example bookingCalculationDaily-gratuity total
Two adults, Carnival standard stateroom$17 × 2 × 7$238
Two adults, Royal Caribbean at the $18.50 rate$18.50 × 2 × 7$259
Two adults, Norwegian Club Balcony Suite or below$20 × 2 × 7$280
Four eligible guests, Carnival standard stateroom$17 × 4 × 7$476

These are calculations using the rates above, not reservation quotes. Use the duration charged in your booking; do not add a day just because a seven-night trip touches eight calendar dates. If guests have different rates or exemptions, calculate them separately and add the results.

A cabin upgrade can change this budget too. At Carnival’s listed rates, moving two adults from a standard stateroom to a suite adds ($19 − $17) × 2 × 7 = $28 over seven nights, in addition to the upgrade price.

2. Check whether gratuities are included, prepaid or still outstanding

Those three labels describe different things. An included benefit should be documented in your fare or promotion. A prepaid amount is something you have already paid. An outstanding amount still belongs in your remaining-trip budget.

For each guest, locate the reservation line item and record:

  • The amount covered and the people it covers.
  • Whether it covers daily crew gratuities, package service charges, or both.
  • Any nights or purchases excluded from the benefit.
  • The balance still due after the benefit or payment is applied.

If an agent says “tips included,” ask them to identify the exact benefit on the confirmation. Keep that confirmation with your payment receipt. This helps you compare two fares without counting the same cost twice.

Our cruise-booking checklist covers the wider fare comparison. Here, the task is to establish which gratuity amounts are already accounted for.

3. Choose prepayment for a clear budget, not an assumed discount

Carnival allows prepayment or automatic posting to the onboard Sail & Sign account. Its online prepayment cutoff is 11:59 p.m. Eastern, two days before sailing. Norwegian says prepaid service charges can be added up to 24 hours before sailing. Those are different deadlines; use your line’s current instructions. Carnival · Norwegian

Prepay if you want the daily amount settled before departure. Leaving it for onboard payment may suit your cash-flow plans, but keep the full amount in your budget.

Before paying early, ask two specific questions: Does this payment lock in a rate, and what happens to it if I cancel or change the booking? Do not assume prepayment is discounted or protects against every future rate change. If you plan to use onboard credit instead, get confirmation that your particular credit can cover that charge.

4. Separate daily gratuities from charges on drinks and dining

Daily crew gratuities and purchase-based service charges are separate budget entries. Carnival currently lists a 20% service charge on beverages, specialty dining and other paid food offerings. Its additional-tip option is optional and goes beyond that service charge. Carnival’s explanation

Royal Caribbean also lists automatic gratuities on specified purchases separately from its daily amount. Check the percentage and adjustment terms shown for your purchase; do not apply another cruise line’s percentage. Royal Caribbean’s policy

Here is a hypothetical Carnival spending plan, not a menu-price quote:

Budget entry for two adults, seven nightsArithmeticAmount
Daily gratuities, standard stateroom$17 × 2 × 7$238
Assumed eligible purchases before service chargeYour own spending estimate$300
Service charge on those assumed purchases$300 × 20%$60
Extra tips chosen by the travelersIllustrative personal choice$30
Gratuities, service charges and extra tips$238 + $60 + $30$328

The $328 is in addition to the assumed $300 of purchases. Together those entries make $628, excluding the cruise fare and any other taxes or fees. Keeping the purchase principal separate prevents an easy spreadsheet mistake.

If a package checkout already includes its service charge, enter that final package total once. Do not add the percentage again. For the separate question of whether a beverage package is worth buying, use our drink-package comparison and break-even guide.

5. Read the adjustment policy before you need it

Automatic posting does not establish a universal rule about whether a charge can be changed. Royal Caribbean’s US policy describes gratuities as optional and allows changes through onboard Guest Relations before the morning of disembarkation; it says changes cannot be made after the sailing ends. Norwegian asks guests to report service concerns onboard so they can be addressed, with adjustment available if concerns remain unresolved. Royal Caribbean · Norwegian

If there is a billing or service problem, raise it during the voyage. Bring the relevant receipt or confirmation and identify the charge you are asking about: daily crew gratuity, purchase service charge, or an extra tip. Ask for a corrected account record if an adjustment is made.

Use the published daily amount for planning. A possible adjustment is something to resolve under the line’s terms, rather than a dependable discount to build into the trip budget.

6. Reconcile the bill before leaving the ship

Keep a small ledger with three columns: expected, already paid, and still due. Match it to the onboard account while there is time to ask questions.

Before-you-pay checklist

  • Confirm the current daily rate, exact cabin category and guests charged.
  • Multiply by the charged nights, including any itinerary-specific adjustment.
  • Find written proof of included benefits and prepaid amounts.
  • Check the prepayment deadline in its stated time zone.
  • Save the payment confirmation and cancellation terms.
  • Budget purchase-based service charges separately from daily gratuities.
  • Check whether a package’s final price already includes its service charge.
  • Read the receipt before filling in an additional-tip line.
  • Resolve duplicate or unexpected charges onboard and retain the final account record.

Questions travelers ask

Do children pay the same daily gratuities as adults?

Age rules differ. Carnival’s current guidance starts at age 2; Norwegian’s starts at age 3. Check every child’s age against the rule for your booking instead of counting only the adults. Those thresholds should not be applied to other lines. Carnival · Norwegian

Does “prepaid gratuities” mean I cannot see another service charge?

No. First identify what was prepaid. The daily crew amount, charges attached to paid purchases, and extra tips belong to separate entries. A drink-package receipt can already include a service charge even while daily crew gratuities remain outstanding.

How much cash should I bring for extra tips?

Choose an amount that fits your plans after checking what your fare and receipts already cover. The $30 in our worked example is an arbitrary budgeting input, not a recommended minimum. Do not turn someone else’s cash-tip habit into a required fee.

What should I ask when comparing two cruise quotes?

Ask: “For everyone in this cabin, what daily gratuities remain unpaid, what service charges are already in the package totals, and which amounts could still be added onboard?” Put both quotes on that same basis before choosing. For other cost differences between brands, see major cruise lines compared.
