9 Things to Know Before Getting the Delta SkyMiles Gold Amex

Traveler comparing Delta airline credit card benefits before applying

The Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card can be easy to justify for some regular Delta flyers, especially travelers who would otherwise pay checked-bag fees. But the headline welcome offer is only one part of the decision.

As of August 31, 2026, the card has a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $150. Several benefits also have fine print that changes their value: a $200 Delta Flight Credit requires $10,000 in eligible calendar-year purchases, and the new rideshare credit does not begin until after the first Card renewal.

This article covers the U.S. consumer Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express Card. Offers and terms can change, and American Express says welcome offers can vary by applicant.

⚡ QUICK ANSWER

The Delta Gold Amex is easiest to justify if you fly Delta enough to use its checked-bag benefit and TakeOff 15 and can naturally use benefits such as the Delta Stays credit. Do not value the $200 Delta Flight Credit at face value unless you would otherwise put at least $10,000 of eligible purchases on the card in a calendar year. The up-to-$120 rideshare credit begins only after the first Card renewal and is split into monthly credits. As of August 31, 2026, Delta’s official application page says applicants may see a welcome offer as high as 80,000 bonus miles plus a $250 statement credit after $3,000 in eligible purchases within six months, with the current offer period ending November 4, 2026 --- but offers vary and eligibility is not guaranteed.

1. Do Not Assume Everyone Gets the Same Welcome Offer

The first number you see in an ad, blog post, referral page, or browser session may not be the offer you actually receive.

As of August 31, 2026, Delta’s official U.S. personal-card page says prospective Delta Gold applicants can find out their welcome offer, which could be as high as 80,000 bonus miles plus a $250 statement credit after spending $3,000 in eligible purchases within the first six months. Delta says welcome offers vary, applicants may not be eligible for an offer, and the current offer period ends November 4, 2026.

That is different from treating “80,000 miles + $250” as a guaranteed public bonus.

Delta and American Express also ran a different limited-time offer earlier in summer 2026. Delta announced in June that new Gold applicants could earn 70,000 miles after $3,000 in purchases plus another 20,000 miles after an additional $2,000 in purchases within six months, for applications approved by July 15, 2026.

2. The Annual Fee Is $0 the First Year --- Then $150

The current Delta Gold consumer card has a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $150.

That makes the first-year calculation different from the renewal-year calculation. A large welcome offer can make year one attractive, but the better long-term question is whether the recurring benefits you will actually use are worth at least the annual fee to you.

Benefit Count it only if…

Free checked bags You would otherwise pay those bag fees

TakeOff 15 You redeem SkyMiles for eligible Delta award travel

$100 Delta Stays credit You would otherwise book an eligible prepaid stay through Delta Stays

Up to $120 rideshare credit You make eligible rideshare purchases after the first renewal and enroll

$200 Delta Flight Credit You naturally reach $10,000 in eligible calendar-year purchases

20% back on eligible in-flight You would make those purchases food/drinks anyway

Do not add every advertised benefit at full face value. Give each one the value it has in your actual travel habits.

3. The Free-Bag Benefit Became More Valuable in June 2026

Starting June 4, 2026, eligible Delta Gold, Platinum and Reserve Basic Card Members received a second checked bag free on qualifying domestic Delta flights, in addition to the existing first-checked-bag benefit.

Delta’s current baggage page lists the standard first checked bag at $45 each way and the second at $55 each way for Delta Main and Delta Comfort customers on domestic itineraries who do not have a qualifying waiver.

The details matter:

  • The first-bag benefit applies under the applicable Delta terms.
  • The new second-bag waiver is limited to qualifying domestic Delta-operated itineraries.
  • The Basic Card Member’s SkyMiles number must be associated with the reservation.
  • Overweight and oversized charges can still apply.
  • The second-bag waiver does not create extra value if the traveler already receives two or more bags free through another benefit.

💡 TIP

If checked bags are your main reason for considering the card, calculate how many eligible round trips you actually take and what you would otherwise pay.

4. TakeOff 15 Does Not Discount Every Miles Booking

Delta Gold Basic Card Members can receive at least a 15% discount on the mileage portion of eligible Award Tickets through TakeOff 15.

Delta’s current terms say the itinerary must be on Delta or Delta Connection carrier-operated and ticketed flights booked through delta.com or the Fly Delta app. The benefit does not apply to partner-operated flights, taxes and fees, Pay with Miles, Miles + Cash, or certain other products and services.

If you regularly redeem SkyMiles for Delta-operated award flights, this can be meaningful. If you mostly buy cash fares or redeem miles for partner itineraries, it may be worth much less.

5. The $200 Delta Flight Credit Requires $10,000 of Calendar-Year Spending

The name “$200 Delta Flight Credit” can sound like an automatic annual travel credit. It is not.

American Express says the Basic Card Member receives the $200 Delta eCredit after eligible purchases on the card account total $10,000 or more in a calendar year.

The eCredit:

  • Is limited to one per calendar year per card account
  • Can be used toward qualifying Delta-marketed flights through eligible Delta channels
  • Can apply to the Delta airfare portion of a Delta Vacations package
  • Is not valid for bag fees, upgrades or other ancillary charges
  • Expires within one year of issuance
  • May take 6—8 weeks after meeting the spending requirement to be issued

Eligible purchases by Additional Card Members can help satisfy the requirement, but fees, interest, gift cards, person-to-person transactions and other excluded transactions do not count.

⚠️ WARNING

Do not spend an extra $10,000 just to earn a $200 credit. The benefit makes the most sense when the spending would have happened anyway.

American Express also says the merchant’s processing date can determine which calendar year a purchase counts toward.

6. The $100 Delta Stays Credit Is Not a General Hotel Credit

The Gold card currently offers up to $100 per calendar year in statement credits for eligible prepaid hotel or vacation-rental bookings through Delta Stays on delta.com/stays.

Eligible bookings must be new prepaid bookings through Delta Stays. The credit does not cover categories such as cancellation fees, property fees, resort fees or other charges made directly by the property. Bookings through Delta Vacations do not qualify for this particular Delta Stays credit.

✓ KNOW THIS BEFORE

Compare the Delta Stays price and booking terms with booking directly. A $100 credit is only worth $100 if you would willingly make the qualifying booking at that price and under those terms.

7. The New Rideshare Credit Starts After Your First Card Renewal

The card now advertises up to $120 in rideshare statement credits per calendar year, but new cardmembers should notice two limitations.

First, American Express says the benefit begins after the first Card renewal.

Second, it is not one $120 credit. After enrollment, the benefit is up to $10 per month on eligible U.S. rideshare purchases with select providers.

Detailed terms exclude non-rideshare services such as delivery, bikeshare, scooters, car rental, transit, memberships and subscriptions.

This benefit can help offset the second-year annual fee for someone who already takes an eligible rideshare every month. It is worth much less to an occasional rideshare user.

8. Everyday Spending Is Not Automatically the Card’s Strongest Use

Current earning rates include:

  • 2X miles on eligible Delta purchases
  • 2X miles at restaurants
  • 2X miles at U.S. supermarkets
  • 1X mile per dollar on other eligible purchases

The question is what you give up by using this card instead of another rewards card.

For someone focused on SkyMiles and the $10,000 Flight Credit threshold, putting more spending on Gold can be intentional. But moving $10,000 solely to trigger the Flight Credit can have an opportunity cost if another card earns more valuable rewards on that spending.

There is also no foreign transaction fee, subject to merchant acceptance.

9. Gold Does Not Include Every Premium Delta Benefit

The Delta Gold card does not currently include Delta Sky Club access.

Travelers pursuing Medallion status should also understand that benefits such as MQD Headstart and MQD Boost are associated with higher-tier eligible Delta cards, not Gold.

The Delta Platinum consumer card currently has a $350 annual fee and includes benefits such as an annual companion certificate after renewal, MQD Headstart and MQD Boost.

That does not make Platinum automatically better. Paying a larger annual fee for unused benefits is worse than choosing the simpler card that matches your travel.

Gold’s strongest case is straightforward: you fly Delta with some regularity, would otherwise pay checked-bag fees, redeem SkyMiles for eligible award travel, can naturally use some credits, and do not need premium-card benefits enough to justify a higher fee.

Before You Apply for the Delta Gold Amex Checklist

  • Check the exact welcome offer shown to you on the official application page.
  • Save the offer terms and application deadline.
  • Confirm required spending and the time period.
  • Remember the annual fee is currently $0 for year one, then $150.
  • Estimate your actual eligible Delta checked-bag costs.
  • Decide whether you use SkyMiles enough to benefit from TakeOff 15.
  • Check whether you would naturally use Delta Stays.
  • Do not count the rideshare credit as a first-year benefit.
  • Decide whether $10,000 of annual spending on this card makes sense without forcing purchases.
  • Consider rewards you would give up by moving spending from another card.
  • Do not assume the card includes Sky Club access.
  • Compare Gold with current Platinum, Reserve and non-Delta alternatives.
  • Read current rates, fees and benefit terms immediately before applying.
  • Never carry interest-bearing debt just to earn miles or trigger a card benefit.

FAQ

What is the Delta SkyMiles Gold Amex annual fee?

As of August 31, 2026, American Express lists a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $150.

What is the current Delta Gold Amex welcome offer?

Delta’s official page currently says applicants can find out an offer that could be as high as 80,000 bonus miles plus a $250 statement credit after $3,000 in eligible purchases within six months, with the current offer period ending November 4, 2026. Offers vary and eligibility is not guaranteed.

Does the Delta Gold Amex give two free checked bags?

Eligible Basic Card Members receive a first checked bag free under applicable terms and, starting June 4, 2026, a second checked bag free on qualifying domestic Delta flights. Restrictions apply.

Does Delta Gold include Sky Club access?

No. American Express currently states that Delta Gold does not have a lounge-access benefit.

Is the $200 Delta Flight Credit automatic?

No. It currently requires at least $10,000 in eligible card-account purchases during a calendar year.

Does the $120 rideshare credit work during the first year?

Not for a new cardmember. American Express says it begins after the first Card renewal. Enrollment is required, and the credit is limited to up to $10 per month on eligible U.S. rideshare purchases.

Is the Delta Gold Amex worth it?

It can be for Delta flyers who would otherwise pay bag fees, use SkyMiles for eligible award travel, and naturally use enough of the card’s credits. It is less compelling when those benefits duplicate status or other cards.

The Bottom Line

The Delta SkyMiles Gold Amex should not be judged by the welcome bonus alone.

The long-term value is mostly about whether its $150 post-first-year annual fee is offset by benefits you would genuinely use: checked bags, TakeOff 15, Delta Stays, eligible rideshare credits after renewal, and potentially the $200 Flight Credit if $10,000 of annual card spending already makes sense.

The biggest 2026 changes make the card more interesting --- especially the second checked bag on qualifying domestic Delta flights and the new post-renewal rideshare credit --- but they also make old reviews and screenshots easier to misread.

Check the live offer and terms immediately before applying, save what you were offered, and value each benefit based on your own travel rather than its maximum advertised value.
